On Saturday, September 8, 2012, local community groups and the 13th District Police Advisory Committee will be hosting a 13th District Officer Appreciation Celebration. The event will take place at St. Helen’s School Hall, 2345 W. Augusta Blvd., from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. There will be door prizes, raffle prizes, food and beverages, and music. Also on tap will be the unveiling of a special video tribute to the 13th District Police Station and its officers.
The Historic Wood St. Station is slated to be closed and demolished in October 2012 when the new 12/13th District is finished at 14th Street and Racine, approximately 4 miles south of the Wood St. Station.
This is part of the City’s plan to consolidate police districts, despite strong opposition from community groups and residents of the 13th District (see www.Save13.org ). This will likely be the last celebration of the Wood St. Station and its officers. All proceeds benefit the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. This charitable 501(c)(3) organization assists police officers catastrophically injured or killed in the line of duty and their families. To date, the Foundation has given over $2.5 million to families of these officers. The event is supported by the 13th District Committee, East Village Association, the Chicago Grand Neighborhood Association, the Ukrainian American Democratic Organization, the Chicago Democratic Alliance, and local businesses, such as, Pinky’s, Tecalitlan, Moonshine, Sunrise Café, and others.
