Go West, Wicker Parkers! West Fest is this Weekend: July 7-8th

By at July 3, 2012 | 12:19 pm | Print

We take this firecracker-length break from our ‘staycation’ to report that West Fest is happening on Chicago Avenue, from Damen to Wood (map it), this Saturday, July 7th and Sunday, July 8th.

The fest, which drew over 50,000 people last year, runs from Noon to 10PM both days. Get psyched for live music on three stages, a Kid Fest, Pet Fest, and participation from neighborhood restaurants and retailers. Atlanta “flower punk” band Black Lips will headline on Saturday night, on the fest’s main music stage (booked by Empty Bottle Presents).

A $5 donation is requested for admittance to West Fest, to offset the costs of the event and to benefit local non-profits like the West Town Chamber of Commerce, the Opus Institute, and the Magi Cultural Arts Center.  West Fest is locally planned and managed by the West Town Chamber of Commerce which is launching a West Town mobile app with a ‘hot deals’ feature – promoting top sales at area businesses – the same weekend as West Fest! Read more about this app on Racked.com or in the chamber’s latest e-newsletter.

Kid Fest (on Wolcott Ave. between Chicago Ave. & Rice, Noon-6PM both days, map it) will feature pony rides and face painting for the little ones, plus arts and music programming for those hard to please tweens and teens. Older kids and all ages will enjoy the programming by The Opus Institute  with live music, arts lessons, B-Boy Battle and music workshops presented by The Opus Institute, Maestro Chroma, Ground Lift Media and Chicago Tribe.  Note: The Kid Fest stage is booked through to 10pm this year to keep the upper teens and under 21 year olds happy in their own secure “Youth” Fest area.

PUP Fest (in that big empty lot on Chicago Ave.) is dedicated exclusively to pet product vendors, canine bathing pools, and plenty of pet activities hosted by West Town’s own Doggy Style Pet Shop and Green Dog Inc. With a $5 donation, dogs can participate in an agility course, an additional obstacle course fun area (with mud pit!), dog “tattooing”, face painting and paw painting, paw cooling stations, raffles and spin-the-wheel prizes. With a $15 donation dogs can enjoy the Suds For Strays Charity Dog Wash. After getting all messy in the mud pit (but prior to getting tattooed), volunteers from the area rescue non-profits will be washing dogs all day. Each dog that gets washed will also receive a gift bag containing freebies and coupons.
