It’s face lift time. Stores, we mean. Belly Dance Maternity, 1647 N. Damen, is remodeling and plans to reopen next month. Until then, pop by its pop-up store in the Gold Coast at 49 East Oak.
Aldi Foods at Milwaukee and Leavitt was closed for two full days this week as the work on its new facade and interior continues. Per a construction worker, there’s no plans to turn the discount grocery into a Trader Joe’s (both are owned by the same company).
The Edit, a boutique at 1917 N. Damen that opened in fall of 2011 officially changed its name, as of June 1st, to Edith Hart, in honor of the owner’s grandmother.
Lastly, Cafe LaGuardia just underwent a remodeling, per its Father’s Day menu and music line-up newsletter (which also promotes its upcoming new space, the Lazy Parrot of the Caribbean, slated to open next month at 2257 W. North, in the former Yuca Cafe space).
Those are just a few of the many things we noticed while “re-distributing” the printed magazines yesterday (find out where to find your copy. We suggest Miko’s Italian Ice, 1846 N. Damen, pictured).
In other news, here’s what’s on our radar for today and tomorrow. If we missed your local event, add it as a comment.
9AM-7:15PM: Weekend hours for Holstein Park pool, 2200 N. Oakley.
10-11AM: Gluttons Anonymous holds a free informational meeting at Mozart Park, 2036 M. Avers, per this flier.
10AM-2PM: Historic Church Architectural Tour. On this tour, you’ll visit five majestic Eastern European churches in nearby Ukrainian Village, like Holy Trinity Cathedral at 1121 N. Leavitt, home of the ‘strawberry social’ where we snapped these images in May 2010. Find in-depth details on the tour on Our Urban Times. $5 suggested donation.
10AM-6PM: Learnapalooza.
This all-day festival of learning offers over 60 totally FREE volunteer-taught classes at 17 venues all over the ‘hood. Home base is at 1333 N. Milwaukee, The Den Theatre, so stop there to hang out and have fun in-between classes. Check out map and classes here, or at left. We’re welcoming dispatches from attendees to feature post-palooza, so send your positive learning experiences to us through our ‘Contact us’ page.
Noon-5PM: Urban Folk Circuit’s final outdoor market. Albeit out of our coverage area, it’s certainly worth the trip to Avondale if you’re hankering for some handmade goods. Visit 3 Bros’ Auto repair, 3722 W. Belmont.
2PM: Enjoy a Free Wine Tasting with a rep from Louis/Dressner who will be pouring these four sublime French Wines (Red & White Wine Shop), 1861 N. Milwaukee Ave). Get your copy of the summer guide at Red & White, too!
Father’s Day is tomorrow. Plenty of places have put together special menus for dads, as well as gift ideas (like this reversible bow tie and padded laptop bag from Mildblend Supply Co. 1342 N. Milwaukee and a bike chain frame from Paper Doll, 2027 W. Division, spotted on its Facebook page).
Check out our weekly e-newsletter where we featured numerous spots for wining and dining your pops. Here’s Club Lucky’s menu, at left.
