A small fire with apparently a lot of smoke allegedly broke out on the deck of a fourth floor condo unit above Jimmy John’s, at 2031 W. Division around 4PM today. The blaze was quickly extinguished by Chicago firefighters. No injuries were reported, according to 14th District Police Officer who was on the scene.

Division Street was closed off to traffic between Damen on the east and Leavitt on the west for about an hour.

Sisters Simal and Filiz, owners of Kiz Boutique, 2035 W. Division, were standing on the street opposite the commotion. Filiz was holding her store’s laptop and her sister was clutching their pooch, Louis.

They’d been unaware of the fire until firemen knocked on their door.

“We didn’t know the severity of it,” Filiz told The Pipeline.  She quickly evacuated along with her sister, and, as she reports, “within a split second there was smoke everywhere.”

According to a fire sergeant, the fire is under investigation.

The Pipeline was alerted to the incident by this post on the Wicker Park Neighborhood Watch Facebook Page. We will keep readers posted on the cause of the fire. Photo of smoke by Jillian Jillian Jillian.
