We’ve all been there. It’s days before Mother’s Day and we’ve been so wrapped up in work and routines that we put off getting a gift for our moms. Don’t feel down and defeated just yet! And don’t rush together a grocery store bundle of carnations until you’ve read my guide to planning a day she’ll think took a month of preparation. Everything you’ll need is also conveniently located in our neighborhood. So whether you’d like to serve her breakfast in bed or spoil her at a spa, or both, here’s your options this Mother’s Day.
Begin with a card. Moms are one of the few people that actually seem to appreciate cards and will probably stick yours on the fridge or in a drawer somewhere. Chances are good the card you select will never be tossed, so choose it wisely! Paper Doll at 2027 W. Division is the best place in the ‘hood to score all kinds of cards, for any and all occasions. We enjoyed this colorful card from Rifle Paper Company.
Want to do the traditional breakfast in bed? Nothing goes better with her favorite scones and coffee other than fresh flowers! Stop by Asrai Garden, 1935 W. North Ave., for a bouquet your favorite woman is sure to love! You could even pick up her favorite scent of lotion to surprise her with in the bathroom, or place a vintage necklace strategically on her bedside table. Does your mom have a green thumb? Surprise her with a planter like this one, spotted on the Asrai Garden Facebook Page!
Another great idea is arranging her favorite color of roses in a unique artisan container you can pick up from Larkspur (2123 N. Damen). Maybe you could decorate her bath tub with candles and oils? Take the kids out and let your wife treat herself to a quiet bubble bath? Or if she likes gardening or bird watching, set up some lovely wind chimes and bird feeders. She’ll be absolutely touched by the thought you put into her gifts. Larkspur has a staff of designers eager to assist you in creating the perfect bouquet as well. What more could a mom ask for?
How about a day of pampering both you and your mother could enjoy? Spa Soak is offering Mother’s Day packages, including “Thank You Mom,” which features massage, pedicure, and facial. She spent all these years working hard and raising you, so why not say thanks with a 30 minute massage? If you REALLY want to show her your gratitude, give her the “Thinking Of You” package, complete with facial, 60 minute massage, scrub, mani, and pedi. She’ll leave Spa Soak feeling like the most appreciated woman in the world! Spa Soak is located at 1733 N. Milwaukee.
I love brunch, don’t you? I’m sure mom would love it too! Swing by Cafe Laguardia (2111 Armitage) for their Mother’s Day brunch. We just called Carlos, pictured, for the scoop… You’ll go into a tasty, fruit coma with their fruit fondue, paired with a fresh strawberry mimosas. I’m salivating just thinking about it! With Beef, pork, paella, and shrimp to choose from, she has plenty of delicious options. End it all with some flan and you might just hear her say it was the best meal she’s ever had.
Your special lady will be greeted with a rose once you are seated at Taxim, located at 1558 N. Milwaukee. Open all day from 11am-9pm, you could treat her to lunch or dinner. Taxim offers Greek cuisine, from lamb soaked in red wine to fava and goat cheese dumplings. Give her a break from cooking and treat her to the best Greek food this side of the Mediterranean! RSVP suggested (plus you’ll look like a star for planning! nothing impresses a mom more, especially if she taught you to plan)
How about all of them! Start her off with a card and coffee, flowers, and presents, then do a little brunch. Top it off with a spa day and dinner. If you think all of this combined will make mom’s head spin, any one of these I’m sure will make it a Mother’s Day that’s hard to top! I hope I’ve helped you out. Nobody like standing in line for wilted flowers and cheap cards the day before at your grocery store. If you have any other helpful tips or places to check out, leave us feedback as a comment. Best of luck and Happy Mother’s Day!
