“It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.” Thus begins The Giver, the Newbery Award winning children’s book by Lois Lowry, coming to the stage later this week at the Vittum Theater (1012 N. Noble). Adventure Stage Chicago brings the 1994 story to life beginning this Saturday, with a special opening performance with the author, who will stay afterward for an audience Q&A, book signing, and Cupcake Social with cupcakes courtesy of Kyle’s Cupcakery.
In the story, a boy named Jonas lives in a community that eschews individuality, and when he turns 12 he begins to discover the contradictions of the world he lives in, and is determined to follow his own destiny. This play is recommended for ages 9 and up.
