Will 2012 be the Year of the Corset?
Heather Garry, a seamstress and designer specializing in custom corsets, lingerie, and ready-to-wear apparel, believes that corsets are going mainstream.
“I have a client that likes to wear a white blouse and a corduroy corset with jeans to work,” Heather told The Pipeline this past Monday when we popped by her shop, Corseterie Custom Apparel, which she co-owns with business partner and longtime friend, Micah Greenlay.
Corseterie opened this past November and is located at 1514 N. Ashland, in the former Serpico boutique space. According to Garry, it’s possible to even lose a few inches off your waist using a “waist training” corset (safely at home, in sweatpants, we Googled it). A custom corset can range from $100 to $500. Each corset contains anywhere from 20-25 stainless steel bones, which are sewn into the fabric. On the corset she showed us, pictured, there were reinforced grommets with lots of detail.
In addition to apparel, the storefront is also home to Scylla Body Designs, which specializes in precious and semi precious metals and stones curated and handcrafted by Greenlay, who might look familiar because he’s worked as a piercer for 10 years, most recently serving as the piercing manager at Metamorph Tattoo on Milwaukee Ave.
For now, Greenlay is only selling jewelry– pictured are just a few pieces spotted in the display cases–though he is in the process of applying for a special use permit to offer piercing services as well. Stay tuned.
Corseterie/Scylla Body Designs is open Mon-Sat, Noon to 9PM, and Sun. Noon- 7PM.
