Labor Day: Last Call for Logan Theater As You Knew It

By at September 5, 2011 | 8:49 am | Print

The area’s only second-run cinema, The Logan Theatre, will be closed for ‘remodeling’ as of September 6th, making today the last day to enjoy a 35mm screening in one of the Logan’s four homey mini-plexes.

The Logan was Logan Square’s first cinema, opening in 1915 as The Paramount Theatre. Constructed as a single screen venue with nearly 1000 seats, it was converted to four screens in the 1980s though thankfully the conversion preserved the architecture of the original lobby and even much of the original theatre interior as only sound-proof partitions were built in the auditorium to separate it into four units.
Known for its dumpy seats, mediocre projection and dirt cheap ticket prices, The Logan has been the perfect venue for viewing second-run Hollywood swill.

But sadly, after today, that will all be changing in the face of modernization. Gone will be the rickety seats (a mixed blessing; trading charm for comfort), gone will be the wonderful original lobby and bathrooms, and gone will be the 35mm projectors as The Logan is slated to fall victim to the plague of murky digital projection (viva technological ‘advancements’). But hey, there’s still one day left to enjoy The Logan in its current incarnation (and prices).  So seize the day and check out Woody Allen’s delightful MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, pictured, or a CGI trio of CAPTAIN AMERICA, TRANSFORMERS and COWBOYS & ALIENS, or the low rent sex comedy HORRIBLE BOSSES.    –J.
